Group Director of the 50 and DC Marathon Group

Jen has always lived in California. She was born in San Francisco, moved to San Rafael on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, and now lives in nearby Santa Rosa. She is married to Will Ortlinghaus, and is the stepmother to his two boys. Jen’s family has always supported her athletic events throughout her life. They even traveled all the way from California to Massachusetts to watch her run the Boston Marathon! (Brother- once; parents-twice; husband- four times.)

Jen studied Spanish Literature at U.C. Davis, and received a teaching credential from Dominican University in San Rafael. She began her teaching career as a high school Spanish teacher, and few years later added Physical Education to her schedule. Jen decided it was time for a change, and went to an elementary school to teach first and second grades in a dual language program. Eventually wanting a job closer to home, she moved to an elementary school in Petaluma where she currently teaches sixth grade.

Jen completed her first marathon in 1999 at Walt Disney World. She promptly “quit” marathoning afterwards…until she registered for the Rock-n-Roll San Diego Marathon. After declaring that she would never do more marathons and then actually doing some here and there, Jen took quite a few years off from this distance. Her husband, Will, had told her that, “running marathons is unhealthy.” Although he meant that it was unhealthy to attempt marathons without appropriate training, it was just the excuse Jen was looking for to quit.

She decided that maybe one last marathon would be a good idea, and in 2006 registered for the Green Bay Marathon. This time Jen did a rigorous training program in order to prepare. In Green Bay she got her time down substantially, and realized that by just dropping fifteen more minutes she could qualify for Boston. She trained hard again, and ran the Silicon Valley Marathon (CA) twenty minutes faster than Green Bay in order to qualify.

Additionally, Jen became a Packer fan that day. In 2006, the racecourse included running through the players’ tunnel and a lap inside Lambeau Field. Jen ran into the stadium as a San Francisco 49er season ticket holder, and came out a Cheesehead! She has since had the opportunity to return to Green Bay to attend two Packers games so far. In fact she adores the team so much she purchased a share of stock and can now proudly call herself an owner of the team.

As for her husband: Will had been traveling with Jen to many of her races as a spectator. He finally became bored with just cheering for her, and completed his first half-marathon in Arizona in 2009. He has also finished 4 marathons in 3 states, including qualifying for and running Boston. Will is now an ultra-marathoner.

Jen still has many states to run in order to complete her first 50 and D.C. She is looking forward to running with many of you in all of her remaining states!
