Antartica Marathon by Roger

Antarctica, The End of the World & towards the 7 Continents
Antarctica Marathon – Saturday, 26th February 2005:
I got my finishers medal a week after I got home, and there was a few problems with the merchandise, but everything else was spot on. Thom Gilligan of Marathon Tours & Travel (Boston) could not believe how well things went, and spent the whole trip expecting something to happen. Listening onboard to Thom telling us what had happened in the preceding 6 marathon trips, make me think what a great job he had done to keep this on the rails.
I travelled from London via DC with United down to BA (Buenos Aires). Not the quickest way, but good for my Mileage points. We had 3 nights at the very good Marriott Plaza, including a banquet on the Sunday night. Temperatures were in the 80’s, but these were soon to drop as we made our way down to Ushuaia at the Southern tip of Argentina, and onto our Russian ship, the Vavilov.
We were on the first ship of two, and were soon making our way from the Beagle Channel into the open waters of the infamous Drake Passage, surely one of the legendary seas of the world. Ok, the ship rocked a bit, but for 2 whole days we travelled South in very kind conditions. We reached our first goal of King George Island early enough to drop off Thom and his crew to set up the course leaving us to sail off glacier and penguin hunting.
We returned to be ferried across to the Island in Zodiacs, for a 9am start. The event was a 2 lap course, taking in 4 research bases, plus 2 miles of Collins Glacier. They don’t have roads as such, so for most, it was pretty hard going, with an ambient temperature around freezing, however the wind chill made it feel a lot colder. I guess we were pretty lucky with the weather, and while I couldn’t honestly say this was the hardest race I’ve done, my legs were not at their best, and I struggled round in 6:08:40.
Race done, we had 3 more days in the area just off the mainland continent, chasing penguins, seals and humpback whales, not to forget the icebergs and glaciers that were everywhere. I briefly had my feet on the continent, before we were heading North, back across the Drake Passage and Ushuaia. The swell had got up a bit this time, but again we were pretty lucky.
King George Island – Antarctica Marathon

Fin Del Mundo Marathon – Sunday, 6th March: (End of the World)
Ushuaia claims to be the most Southerly city in the world, with the marathon running along the most southerly road in the world. Without going into Chile, I couldn’t prove the claims, but as there isn’t a marathon there, then that will do.
We were ferried from the dock up to our hotel above Ushuaia. After a week of inactivity on ship, I was glad to take an easy run down into the centre. It was probably around 4 miles, virtually all downhill. With just 2 days to go until the marathon, I certainly wasn’t going to run up again, and at just 7 pesos, a taxi was in order.
We started the marathon within a few yards of the end of the road from BA, just 3063km, if we wanted to go all the way. Fortunately we only had 42km to run. The first 15km were contained within the Tierra del Fuego National Park, with another 3km before we hit surfaced road. However, it wasn’t the surface that got you, it was the endless hills, before we eventually had a downhill stretch to the outskirts of Ushuaia.
At halfway, we had an out-and-back loop up to the new Airport, before taking in San Martin, the main street thru Ushuaia. At 30km, there was a nasty surprise, as we climbed up above the town. Of course, what goes up, must come down, so this did mean some nice easy miles to bring us home. Easy miles in a marathon, you must be joking, but I couldn’t blame the terrain at this point.
If you have ever been on ship, you will know that food is not a problem, of course the weight you put on, is! I’d carried that extra weight without stopping, and wasn’t going to walk now, so gathering myself I stormed past a couple of fellow travellers in the last km to finish in 4:13:22.
If you have observed, it is men that are more playful and are often the first option for patients because of its profound impact on viagra australia cost killing bacteria. Around the world, businesses and drug companies that seek to deceive consumers have launched convincing advertisements and commercials, which show the supposedly effective results of this medication on the first stage of their treatment of sexual problems. 5. http://pdxcommercial.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/B39-New-Brochure.pdf viagra cipla Researches and studies have indicated that improper treatment of depression can cause major psychological misbalance buy cheapest cialis and dysfunction of brain. best levitra prices pdxcommercial.com Luckily, both of those situations are very uncommon, and most surgical procedure for a lumbar herniated disc is an elective procedure. This was the 3rd running of the Fin Del Mundo Marathon, and the race director must have thought it was Christmas. Around 100 Antarctica travellers stayed on to run in Ushuaia, boosting the marathon to record numbers. Problem is, Antarctica is biannual. I hope this marathon survives this problem, as this was a pretty good event run in the stunning surroundings of the city, mountains and sea.
The race for 7 Continents:
Ok, now the contentious bit.
I’d always planned to knock off all the continents, but the addition of South America to this trip, made me decide to do all 7 in one year, although in theory I only needed to do Australia after this trip. I didn’t even need Argentina, as I’d run in Rio back in 1991, when I was actually capable of getting near the 3 hour mark.
Ok, why contentious? Firstly some thoughts on why the 50 States Club made a couple of rules:
1) Because there was no marathon within DC (I know there was a recent short lived event), runners were allowed to count the Marine Corps as DC although it actually started and finished in Virginia.
2) Ultras were allowed as not all States had a marathon.
Both of these rules are fair within their context.
Well, if you look at the Antarctica Marathon, it is actually on an Island. I know that the purist would still count it, as it’s only just off the mainland, and surely considered part of Antarctica. However, it’s the only one, so it would be reasonable to say that rule 1 above reasonably fits this bill.
Ok, let’s now look at the other 6 continents. Do we need to pick an Ultra, when there are clearly loads of marathons on each continent? I feel the answer is no.
Now we come down to what is a continent? Well, I guess I was already aware that Hawaii was part of North America, and this trip has taught me that Easter Island is actually part of South America, while Iceland would appear to be part of the European Continent. Ok, if you live in South America, don’t bother going to Europe, just go to the Falklands, as I would say that is as much part of Europe as Hawaii is North America.
Of course, according to Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the Falklands are actually part of Antarctica, so that’s 2 continents killed in one. I say, come on you lot, make a bit of an effort, and when you say you have run a marathon on the 7 continents, mean it!

8.COURSE DESCRIPTION,

The start of the Miami Tropical Marathon was early (some clubs were letting out to cause some traffic problems other than the usual runners’ parking traffic) for both marathoners and half-marathoners alike as the starter’s pistol set us off into the darkness of 6:00 in the morning. The street lamps provided sufficient lighting for safe travel as we left the American Airlines Arena (where port-a-potties and arena restrooms had handled the pre-race demands quite amply). The route was well marked by orange cones and little signs with arrows or instructions. The weather was cooperative as we ran under partly-cloudy skies in low-sixties temps for the first few hours; later in the day, we would feel the humidity when the sun broke through and brought the temperatures into the upper-seventies. The first few miles provided a view of the cruise ships at harbor (very pretty with all their lights on) in Biscayne Bay as we crossed the MacArthur Causeway to South Beach (where the Art Deco architecture of the multi-story buildings identified our location). There were more spectators in South Beach than elsewhere on the course but most of them had signs and cameras indicating that they were tracking the progress of a runner and not inquisitive locals (we must have been up too early for that crowd). Bands and DJs were peppered here and there on the course to add entertainment and rhythm. We ran a few miles more through the community before crossing the Venetian Causeway (no toll was collected of the runners) and its small bridges (very pretty views of the back bay and all the boats parked along the shoreline) to Downtown Miami. There appeared to be substantial redevelopment in the works for the downtown area as the course twisted to get to the host (Hyatt) hotel where 70 percent of the runners would peel off to their half-marathon finish (1,718 full marathoners and 4,161 half marathoners would finish the Sunday race); the streets suddenly seemed relatively quiet as 70 percent of the spectators also disappeared. From that point to the finish line, encouragement would come primarily from the volunteer crossing-guards and water station staff; we would return their efforts with verbal thanks (that seemed much appreciated). Mile 16 would start us running through the residential areas of Shenandoah and Coconut Grove where a few driveway parties popped up to witness our progress. One fellow saw my Legger shirt coming toward him and shouted that he recognized the club and said, “Santa Monica, right?”; he got a thumbs up from me … there seemed to be a great deal of surprise several times in the morning that a runner from L.A. would be doing their marathon. The pretty downtown area of Coconut Grove provided a nice distraction as we could see what “normal” people would be having for breakfast at the outdoor cafes; we continued on with our Carb-Boom energy gels (3 water stations offered them). The Hash House Harriers made their appearance at Mile 20; I declined their offer of beer but accepted their words of encouragement. We ran past the Coconut Grove Convention Center, Coral Reef Yacht Club, Mercy Hospital, and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens back to Downtown Miami and the finish at Bayfront Park. A beautiful medal with a spinning palm-tree center would be our reward for finishing the trek. The post-race grub included cookies, bananas, apples, and hot black beans and rice (very tasty after our morning’s work). All in all, it had been a very scenic tour of the Miami area and most of the miles run had been relatively flat except for the bridges. Shade was the commodity most sought as the temperature rose in the late morning; fortunately, there were a number of overhanging trees that helped the overheating runners (and added to the beauty of the course).

There was an announced 6 hour time limit with the disclaimer that if you took longer, you could move to sidewalks. At my pace, the police were patrolling with megaphones telling us to do that. However, the cones were still in place, so I ignored the police and got away with it. The race was point to point, strong wind in your face almost the whole time. That weather is usual for this race. I thought the race course was boring, but what can you expect from a desert course? The water stations beyond mile 18 or so, had been abandoned, sandy water in cups on the ground (hard to bend down or over at that point in the race for us ancient cripples). We stayed in the Gold Strike Hotel at the race start. Rooms were good hotel rooms, $50 on Saturday, $20 the other nights.

Race held on Saturday, early Janauary

The Museum of Aviation Foundation Marathon is a very small race with plenty of southern hospitality. In 2004, there were only about 70 marathoners, but many other runners were present for the half marathon event and 5K run/walk also held in conjunction with the marathon. The race is held entirely within the confines of the Warner Robins Air Force Base and all entrants need to present a picture ID before entering the base. The marathon and half marathon events both start at 8 am while the 5K starts at 8:15 am. No time limit for the marathon was actually specified on the website or in the information provided to runners but the slowest race time recorded in 2004 was 6:45:59. No race chips are used.

Course and Weather Conditions

The race begins at the Century of Flight Hangar and the course is essentially a big loop around the base. Half marathoners run the loop once while marathoners run the loop twice. Early on in the course, participants run past many base buildings and facilities. The course then goes out past airfields where runners may see a plane take off and fly overhead if they’re lucky. Later on, scenic ponds, nice woodsy campground areas and horses are seen as runners pass by the base’s recreational areas. Before heading back towards the start, runners will pass through some residential areas on base. The finish line for marathoners is past the half marathon finish line at the top of a gradual incline. The course is USATF certified and is considered to be flat but has a couple other short inclines.

In 2004, temperatures started off in the low 40’s and got up to into the low-50’s by noon. As in previous years, the course was quite windy and runners faced a strong wind on various parts of the course. Before and after the race, runners could stay warm inside the Century of Flight Hangar where all pre-race and post-race festivities were held.

Support

Aid stations were located every two miles, and water and a sports drink were offered at all aid stations. Most of the cheering is done by the wonderful volunteers who braved the cold and wind to be there for the runners. There were very few spectators along the course and only a few at the start/finish area as well, mostly because the race is so small and entirely on the base.

Restrooms were available at the start/finish area in the Century of Flight Hangar. For full marathoners, that also meant restrooms were near the halfway point too. The course was well marked and the mile markers (two numbers, one for each loop) were clearly visible. On the second loop, I noticed a few cars driving slowly on part of the race course. However, the total number of runners was so small and runners were so spread out that this did not really present a hazard.

Other

The Museum of Aviation Foundation Marathon is a very well organized race with some of the friendliest volunteers and runners I’ve ever met. There was no expo or pasta dinner. Runners pick up their race packets the morning day of the race in the Century of Flight Hangar and are asked to leave their picture ID with the race personnel and claim them after finishing. There was plenty of post-race food and chairs to sit on in the hangar. Runners received a very nice colorful sweatshirt and an above-average medal. Due to the small race field, many runners also receive nice trophies in addition to the finisher medals. First-time visitors to the base should not miss the excellent displays and many restored military aircraft that are in and around the several buildings that comprise the Museum of Aviation.
